Appearance:

Modern perceptions paint the nobles of the Heian era as being slim, effete, decadent individuals. However, upon looking at Abe no Murasaki, it's clear the first part couldn't be more wrong. Rather than a slender willowbranch build, she sports a healthy, athletic figure. Her round face with its high cheekbones is enhanced by the curious beauty customs of her timeperiod - straight dark hair that falls to midback (cut back severely as it had been nearly floorlength in life) bereft of any ornamentation aside from a ribbon to hold it back in a loose ponytail, and eyebrows that have been shaved and replaced by two thumbprint smudges of black makeup high on her forehead. Quite often, she keeps her face painted completely white with powder.
Personality:
Tattoos/Markings:
Shinigami Outfit:
Her shinigami robes are traditional yet hare to the conservative side; she seems determined not to show an inch of skin unless she has to. The sleeves of her black upper kimono are a tad longer than normal and bell a little more, serving to conceal her hands up to the wrists, while the length of the hem brushes her ankles only granting viewers the briefest flash of white tabi when she moves. One might think that such a choice of design would inhibit her movement, but it clearly doesn't trip her up or hinder her in any way. After all, she's worn *far* more cumbersome gear.

History:
The stories say that the road to Abe no Murasaki's death began the moment she accepted the request of Emperor Takakura to attend his court as a shirabyoshi, a sacred singer and dancer of the Heian period. This was indeed a lucky thing; as the youngest daughter of a minor member of the esteemed Abe clan, she had no hopes to follow her father in the family art of onmyodo although she learned at his feet, and very little in the way of prospects to marry well. So, her family had sent her off to be trained at a very early age, and now her knowledge of the spirit world plus her performance skills had brought her recognition.
Her father performed the divinations, and as he did, a butterfly flew in through his open window and settled on the yin side of his tools, facing south. She saw this as auspicious, but her father pronounced it a dark omen. Murasaki was not one to disregard her father's prophecies, but she understood that if things must be, they must be, and no action by her could ever hinder them. So she smiled at her grim-faced father, and sung this verse:
If it is the path
of real sorrow,
like death,
let me stretch it out
as long as my life.
"But your life will not be long," he replied, and turned away from her. She had left; neither could stand the pain of such a parting.
So, she presented herself at the court nine days after that, bowing deeply to the divine emperor. And as she lifted her head, her gaze drifted over another...and hung. He was a handsome young man in court robes, and he returned her look with interest. All that night, during her performance, he remained within her view, smiling slightly. At the banquet afterwards, they sat in different places due to rank, but even though she could not see him, she felt his eyes on her. They never actually spoke to one another.
One of her courtier cousins saw her blushing in an unguarded moment, and during a moment of privacy, informed her of who the young man was. He was Taira no Junpei, a member of the prosperous, ruling Taira clan - and in that moment she understood her father's prophecy, for the mon, or symbol, of the Taira was a butterfly. She tried to resist for a time, but what must be, must be, and one night some years later, as the moon rose above the imperial garden, they admitted their love for each other.
The years passed, and the two loved. In a courtly way, mind. He was of noble birth, and would never be expected to actually marry a shirabyoshi, even if she was of the esteemed Abe clan. But they took pleasure in each other's company, even after he was arranged to marry another more suitable woman.
In early 1183, the world changed. The court of the Taira shifted to a warfooting as the Minamoto clan went to war against their leaders, and the happy times vanished.
Which takes us to 1185, and the battle of Dan-no-Ura. On that day wives and mothers attended their husbands during the sea battle, and although she was not a wife or mother, Murasaki was not far from Junpei aboard the young emperor Antoku's ship. It was hidden among the other warships, and the emperor's location was kept secret...until a captain of their army betrayed it to the Minamoto. Suddenly the Taira's victory turned to ashes, and as the Minamoto neared, the army had to make the choice of surrender, or suicide. Many of the Taira aboard Antoku's ship chose the latter, leaping into the sea rather than face future ignominy. Among those was the emperor himself, who died in the arms of his grandmother.
Maybe if she hadn't been on the same ship as Taira no Junpei, she might not have attempted the leap into the ocean herself when her love disappeared beneath the waves. Maybe if she hadn't been on the ship everyone was focused on, she might have succeeded in the attempt. However, the Minamoto had heard rumors that the Taira were determined to take the Three Sacred Jewels along with them, and started hauling people out of the sea as they saw them. Murasaki's bright robes caused them to mistake her for a Taira noblewoman, and they hauled her out of the sea by her hair with a long rake.
Murasaki didn't live very long after that; the combination of grief, pneumonia and maltreatment by the Minamoto brought her to a shivering, horribly fevered end about a month later.

Description:
Shikai
Shikai Name: Amakudari - Descent from Heaven
Release Command: Hanase - Speak.
Shikai Appearance:

Amakudari is considered one of the most unusual zanpakuto in Soul Society, and extremely lovely.
Upon release, the zanpakuto turns to mist and winds around Murasaki, eventually coalescing into its new form: a ringblade that resembles a silver bird eating its own tail. The 'feathers' arc out from the ring to form sharp, stabbing edges. The diamond that was set in the zanpakuto's hilt becomes the bird's gleaming 'eye'.
The inside of the ringblade is dull, enabling it to be swung around the shinigami's arms and legs without injury, and there's a few handles here and there for gripping. The zanpakuto knows her mistress and and will not willingly cut her, but Murasaki makes a point of rarely ever touching the outside of the blade out of respect to her weapon.
Shikai Ability:
Shikai Techniques:
- Limit 6
Amakudari's abilities revolve around sound. When released, the zanpakuto absorbs sounds around it and uses it as a weapon in its techniques. The sounds travel in waves, so close up the attack is most powerful; successive 'rings' from the blast radius lose power exponentially.
The only way to end the barrage is by having Murasaki silence Amakudari by sheathing her, or by rendering her unable to fight.
The maximum range for any of her distance attacks, currently, is fifty yards. Anything further is ineffective.
Generic Attack:
Objects and people that contact or are cut by Amakudari directly receive the full concentrated force of the sonic waves, which surround the blade and enhance the cutting edge like a buzzsaw. Her fighting style is a mix of hakuda and kido, with occasional blasts or strikes from the zanpakuto as needed.
Technique Name: Ichi no Kotoba: Isshou (First Word: Laughter)
Description:
Her standard distance attack is performed by gripping the zanpakuto and swinging it an arc in front of her. Amakudari lets off a cone-shaped burst of sonic waves that slash the opponent.
Technique Name:Ni no Kotoba: Sasayake (Second Word: Whisper)
Description:
A strike of the zanpakutou on the ground at her feet along with the spoken command activates Sasayake. It sends a sonic pulse through the ground in concentric waves, like Doppler radar. When it reaches a target, it explodes upwards for damage. Again, the farther out the wave has to travel, the less damage it does.
Technique Name: San no Kotoba: Kansei (Third Word - Battle Cry)
Description:
By swinging the zanpakutou in circles over her head, Kansei activates. The prongs stretching out from Amakudari's blade begin to vibrate filling the zone around the shinigami for about ten feet with extreme sonic ripples. Ayane is immune to the power, but opponents within that area are deafened (and in some cases, blinded due to the pain) by the sound bursts for a time relative to their reiatsu strength when compared to Murasaki's. For example, people close to her in strength may be stunned for a few seconds, opponents weaker than her will probably be unable to move for a few minutes, and those far stronger will say “I'm sorry, were you doing something there?”
This is a power that Murasaki uses to buy time to get distance between her and her opponent, or outright escape.
