Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
"What are we supposed to do now?" a feminine voice had finally filled the silence that had been amongst the members of Squad 4. They had brought their former Captain to the Squad 4 barracks placing her within a large room with a large, metallic table and had examined almost every piece of her that they possibly could, however there was no hope. She was simply gone and they're worst nightmares were perhaps coming true. "We're not done yet. Keep repairing her corpse. Even if she is gone, we won't leave her in this state," another female would speak, except this one seemed more determined and authoritative. Her eyes had never once looked away from the body as she noted something had been off the whole time. They had been working on their beloved Captain's body for hours, yet she had felt this strange presence through it all.

"Uhm, Cap- I mean.. Lieutenant.. there's.. something off about this.. zanpakuto," a male's voice would call out from the corner, where they had placed Mei's belongings at the beginning of the procedure. "What are you talking about?" The confused lieutenant would turn around while tearing off her gloves as the male approached her. "Wait.. What?" The woman's eyes would become wider as she held the being within her hands. Then, she would begin to bark off orders and her face would turn into a grin incomparable to anything she had ever felt, "We can save her! This can save her!
Her own life force is being preserved within this very artifact!"

It would take them quite a long time to repair the damage that had been done to the woman. Her flesh would be replenished leaving her with wounds that would need time to heal on their own, however her life would be regained. Her zanpakuto had managed to store away the last of her living being while restoring it knowing that Squad 4 wouldn't give up and their Captain. With all the hope they had, their Captain would be pieced back together rejoicing when she had finally been awoken just a few days later. Many cried, smiled, and laughed, except they all had a single heavy burden upon their hearts. First, they would move their Captain into a nicer room with a window view and a much softer bedding. From the window, Mei could look down upon the garden at the many colorful flowers that had been growing and see the most wonderful view for a deserving triumph.

Upon the waking of Squad 4's rightful Captain, the lone lieutenant would see to it that Mei was taken care of before taking off to the only one who needed to know of the woman's revival. She had made her way to him as quick as possible entering his barracks without a care, running into his own squad members while apologizing profusely, and not even bothering to knock upon his door before entering. "Captain Noziel.." she would say panting while forcing the words out of her, "I need you to come with me... please.. it's an emergency."

I received a call all too early in the morning, but for this, I would wake up at any hour. One of the low-seated girls from Squad 4 had rushed over to my office, and knocked on the door until I was awake. She asked me to come with her, but through staggered breathing. Something wasn't right, but I was sure I'd find out soon enough. I was directed to the barracks of Squad 4, a place I'd long left behind simply because there wasn't anything more there for me. Today was a different story. My wife, Mei Tsaki was back, lying on a very carefully arranged bed of pillows and flowers. There were far more flowers than usual in the center of Squad 4, but for an event such as this, it felt just so that it would be like this. I had indeed heard that the man slated to take Mei's place as Captain refused to do so and instead only took the role of Emergency Captain.

Ever since that day, he was present in his office one day of the week, assumedly searching tirelessly for his old friend and valued master. I could respect that, and without him, my dear wife would not be here. I slowly walked to the bedside of my beloved, and spoke softly. "Mei.... I'm here. It's Noziel. A lot has happened in your absence, but all is well. I've missed you terribly.... I..." My voice broke, as it took a lot to say it. With tears flooding my eyes, barely being held back, I began again. "I thought you were dead, Emiko too..." I couldn't hold back any longer, and as I sat at her bedside, caressing her forehead, I knew she was very weak. She had a heavy fever, which I could only expect from someone who hadn't quite died to the injuries she had sustained. Her forehead was cloaked in a mixed sweat of cold and hot. Of course her body was now healing, but as I thought she might be, her body was still bleeding in a few places.

I hummed the same tune I would hum for Emiko on those nights that her mother had passed out, and I was left to put her to rest. I did surely want to know what had become of our daughter, but too much bad news at one time was detrimental to the heart, I thought it best to live for the one I was so attached to.

Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
The young woman had finally gotten the Captain out of his bed and dragged him along with her back to the barracks. At the entrance, she had slowed to a walk becoming too tired to move so quickly anymore, besides Squad 4 was a place to be highly careful of your surroundings. They had wandered the corridors taking many turns through the twisted hallways of their hospital section, and then they'd finally slow to a stop in front of a door. The young woman would be hesitant to allow access simply because of the state of the patient, however she had already dragged him so far to her and she knew he wouldn't harm her in any way. Turning to him with tears in her eyes and a large smile, she would place her hand on the nob, "It's simply a miracle," she would whisper before turning it and pushing the door open.

The woman would allow Noziel to set his sights upon the lovely, yet recovering woman. However, she had also been observing the Captain and decided she would enter just after Noziel had to care for the woman in his presence. Upon the bed, Mei's eyes would be closed, but they seemed to squint with pain as it seemed a few of her smaller wounds had begun to bleed again. Yet, her fever was still the same temperature leaving her rather sweaty and normally sleeping for as long as it took for it to go away. Mei would feel a body sit itself upon her bed and hear a voice so sweet and familiar. Her hand would move little by little to feel for the one that was next to her before making context with one of his hands. Her eyes, although appearing very tired, would open to see his features looking down at her. He appeared to be in some sort of pain by the look on his face and the sound within his voice. At this point, Mei was in no condition to understand most of what had been happening nor did she have the slightest clue as to why she was in the hospital, except she could tell she had been harmed by something with her wounds.

While Noziel caressed the blonde, the nurse that had entered the room had begun caring for the wounds that had began to bleed again. She would replace bandages that were dirty, place a cold, wet towel upon the woman's forehead, and wipe the sweat from a few places upon her body. It had been made quite obvious to the rest of the Squad that only a select few were allowed into the Captain's room to care for her and there would be punishment for anyone who violated that rule. As for Mei, she was simply focused on recooperating and the song that Noziel hummed for her. She had heard it but a few times when he had thought she was already asleep. She adored listening to the tune but something had begun to feel different within her. She began to feel as if something should be bothering her heart, except all she could focus on was what was in front of her, Noz.

"N-Noz..." Mei's voice was barely audible, very soft and her breathing was a bit heavier, "W-Why am I... here?" The nurse stared at the Captain with awe as the sign of speech meant progress, which she wouldn't waste on the other nurses. It had seemed as if having Noziel there was a larger reason for her to want to recover quicker. Large pink eyes would state up at Noziel wanting to know things, wanting to talk to him again, and wanting to simply hear his voice.

I hadn't quite realized she was so deeply lost to the world in her state, but my presence here, as she breathed it in and felt me here... She seemed to receive it earnestly, and so happily drink it in. Within minutes of my arrival, she opened her eyes, felt around for my hand... and found it. In the back of my mind, I was so very relieved to have her back. I had been afraid of the truth for so long. She was clearly in a lot of pain, and beyond exhausted... As her fingers meshed with mine, I saw that familiar sliver of pink in her eyes and smiled. My blonde goddess of a wife, in all her beauty, though tragic it might be... She was alive.

My thoughts were scattered, but I couldn't care about that little detail... Mei..She seemed to hear my song, and to lean into the embrace of the notes, and yet somehow still seemed lost. Had she heard it?... As I pondered it, she spoke my name, straining herself to do so, seeming rather confused about what had happened, where she was, why she was here... "Mei, darling, you're in the barracks of Squad 4. You're home. It's alright, I'm here..." As I spoke, my voice was tender and soft, just like it always was when I spoke to Mei or Emiko. She'd probably be glad that I still had that voice...

I seemed to get encouraging looks from the nurses. That was a good sign. Looking back to Mei, her eyes were now fully open and they seemed to be pleading with me. I'll be honest, I knew that look. It was the look she gave me whenever she wanted me to keep talking. I smiled warmly and continued. "You remember that time Emiko fell asleep for all of five minutes, then I left for the night and she could tell I'd gone, woke up and wailed until I came back? I had to hold her the whole night. Oh yes, I'd do anything to hold that child and keep her safe.. you know I would."

Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
Pink eyes would wander the room noticing other familiar faces that seemed to being comfort to her aching being. They would wander the surroundings to notice she was surrounded by medical supplies and bandages. This place seemed to soothe her as it was a place she deemed to be a place that filled her most obvious, desirable passions. When she was within her barracks, she was proud, she was happy, she felt complete, and just as Noziel has said, she felt like she was home. Pink eyes would drift towards the window, so she could see the flowers below. She saw how they bloomed and their beautiful colors. Beautiful... Where was Emiko?

The woman would listen to Noziel's words and slowly pieced together his story. Her small girl had been so afraid to fall asleep because she didn't want to lose her mommy again. She didn't want to lose her new daddy. She didn't want to fall asleep and never wake up to them. It was heartbreaking for Mei to see, but it had made the sweetest memories. Even more so than the one that Noz had just expressed. Her small, pink lips would form into a sweet smile as she thought about her tiny, blonde love. That child was her whole world and it was shown in her words, "I cant..
wait to hold her.. again. W-Where is she? I-I bet she's so worried."
With those few words, the room grew dark and silent. However, Mei couldn't quite tell the difference, except everyone ceased all movement for a few fractions of a second before resuming.

The staff that tended to their returned master seemed to carry expressions that conveyed a turbulent mix of emotions.. Grief, Anxiety, Joy, Relief, Surprise. More even. It was actually hard to understand how that mix of emotions was even able to be displayed in a single set of faces, but they did just that. As I shifted my focus back to Mei, I noticed her eyes scanning the room. She seemed to be confirming for herself that she was indeed home. Her expression softened, but only slightly. The secondary effect keeping her from relaxing, and I'm sure of it, was likely to be Emiko's absence.

As she mulled over my story, what would seem like it were over and over again, savoring every memory, she finally asked the tough question. "W-Where is she? I-I bet she's so worried." And this question, while an appropriate and rightful question to ask... was one which I did not have the answer to. I stuttered and stammered, for quite a few minutes. Finally I gave up and glanced over to the dedicated group of seats who had been caring for Mei "I don't suppose you know what happened to our daughter, do you? It won't do any more good to withhold it."

Though my wording may have come across as cold and harsh, my tone was gentle, almost pleading. I wanted to tread lightly as I asked of them what could possibly be the most painful request I had made of them yet.

Pink eyes wandered the faces of the nurses as they tried to hide their features or turn away from her, however she was beginning to feel the sadness between them. The blonde woman would turn to Noziel as she wondered if he noticed the sadness in the room too, but she wasn't sure why everyone would be so sad. They had all been very joyous leaving and exiting her room, so she couldn't fathom what had change during this day. Had she made them upset? Did she do something wrong? Noz seemed to be trying to talk to her, except he couldn't find words to say. Pink eyes would state upon him wondering if she had confused him or hurt his feelings. Then, he would begin asking the nurses questions.

One specific nurse was looked to by all others to speak before they began to scurry away having fixed Mei up for the time being. The woman would stare at Noziel with a look of half horror half, terrible sadness. She had indeed given bad news to more people than she could count herself, however she had never attempted to deliver news such as this before and considering they were Captains made it harder. "W-Well,
Y-you see, Captain, i-it's just that... I certainly.. do know.
I-I'm.. the one... who.. uhm.. examined her,"
the woman's voice would become gradually softer and a bit hoarse. Her eyes seemed to withhold a pain that she hasn't been prepared for, which was obvious by the tensing within the woman.

Faintly, through my senses, I could 'feel' Mei looking around the room behind me. She was more intent on finding out what had happened to Emiko than she was recovering, and I couldn't blame her. Truthfully I wanted to know too... Mei was escorted by bed to another room, to continue her treatment, and the silence became even more forebearing and heavy.

One of the nurses stepped forward and stuttered as she spoke, and I could tell that this was one of the hardest things she'd ever had to say. I don't think I could have been prepared for her words either, seeing as she could barely speak, and her voice quivered in pain, as if she was taking all the blame for everything that had happened. I leveled my gaze to the woman gently, softening it to attempt to make it easier on her "Please, just say it. I can't blame you for doing everything you possibly could. I won't get angry with you, and I promise, I'll accept anything, so long as it is the truth." My tone would not be that of judgement or anger, but instead that of a patient and understanding father.

I'd place my hand on the nurse's shoulder, a second attempt to give her enough courage to speak without falling to pieces. I could feel her muscles, overly tensed. I assumed it was indeed that bad, if her body was straining itself that much. Gentle nudges would hopefully ease the girl's suffering.

Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
The blonde Captain was simply trying to make sense of the woman's words, while the other doctors moved her out of the room. Mei would attempt to stop them from moving her, however she wasn't strong enough and they weren't going to allow her to be traumatized by any bad news until she could handle it. The blonde would attempt to roll off her bed before being pinned down with a pain shooting up her body. "Can somebody please... just tell me what's happening? Where am I going? Why am I leaving?" Mei had grown quite concerned in her confused state leading to an increase heart rate and movement. Upon entering a new room, the doctors would begin to calm the woman by distracting her from the problems at hand, which would take effect for the time being. Seeing the Squad 4 Captain in her lowest time simply made all of their hearts yearn for her recovery. They would attempt to speed up her recooperation as much as possible.

During this time, the woman who had been speaking to Noziel became quite a bit paler and nervous. Now, it was simply him and her together within the larger room that felt as if it were so much smaller than it should have been. The large room that seemed to be closing in and filling with a pressure that could be pierced through with the smallest flick of a needle and be suspended within the atmosphere for as long as one wished. The woman would breathe deeply trying to calm herself and keep her tears at bay. Then, his voice would break the void of silence in a soft, calming way that would give her a sense of serenity, but only when he nudged her on the shoulder would she be able to speak properly.

"I-I failed. Her body was just... so fragile... her spirit was so strong... but her body wasn't... H-Her skin was so.. so.. detached... and she..just.. lost.. so much blood. W-What else could I do?" The woman's eyes would tear up as her voice cracked and broke. Her voice became highly unstable and her voice became louder the more she spoke, "We... returned her skin to normal.. but her heart was too small. We couldn't get it beating again.. the look.. her corpse.. so frail and pale..
It was so void of emotion and energy.. her eyes just.. stared.. in their chocolate color... I-I couldn't help but.. think she looked like I was the only thing that could save her... but I... failed.. I failed. She died because I couldn't save her.. I-W-We... just... loved her so much."
The woman's eyes would overflow with tears somewhere within the middle and her voice would raise into a shout while she sank to her knees. That little girl died because she couldn't be saved. It just so happened it was this poor nurse burdened with the experience of not being able to do it.

As the others finished escorting my wife out of the room, it became heavily silent. The girl seemed even more pressured and scared, I immediately thought of a rabbit, in terms of her level of neuroticism and anxiety. I tried here and there to pour a little peace by way of spirit, and she took a deep breath, enough to tell me what had happened. Her voice cracked with nearly every word she spoke, tears were slipping out without pause, and it took all the air she had left in her just to speak. I felt for the poor girl in her pain, and she gave me the truth, as I had asked for it. Emiko didn't make it out alive. There was simply too much damage there, not enough blood and tissue left in her to even hold her together, much less keep her alive.

"Listen, I know how hard it was for you to say it. I know it hurts. The loss of Emiko is a hefty loss to us all, to each and every one of you, and especially to Mei and me. There wasn't anything else you could have done, and you gave it everything you could.... I know you... did." It was at this point where I cracked. I had been trying to come off as strong and ever-enduring, as I always tried to be, but at the loss of our daughter... especially the way she was lost, I found it hard to stomach. My gaze deflected downward for a few moments, then back up, and my eyes burned as tears forced their way out. I was crying again, and I didn't care how the nurse saw me as a result. I couldn't blame her, but I still felt a deeply rending pain in my core.

I righted myself and wiped my face, and looked at the girl who was clearly hurting too. "Can I go back to see her? I know she'll be okay, but... I think she might need me."
