Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
The Daughter
Large, brown eyes stared off behind the woman into nothingness, as the tall blonde woman hugged her. A whiff of her scent was all the small girl needed to remember who she was. She remembered every day after her mother worked, she remembered every night she slept with the woman, she remembered the many fights they had, and she remembered her undying love for her mother. A tear would build up in the child's left eye before it slowly crawled out and rolled down her cheek. In that moment, the girl would lose it buckling onto her knees only for her mother to support her tiny frame. The small girl cried dropping her stuffed toy and wrapping her arms around the pink eyed female. "I knew you'd come. I dreamed about you every night, mummy. I did. I know you won't leave me again. I know," the small blonde girl would whisper to her mother. After a small while of embracing, the girl would notice a man with her beautiful mom.

Brown eyes would blink as he spoke to her mom referring to her as "Mei". Then, he would speak to her causing her to smile, even with her wet face. "Ello. It's nice to meet you too. Wait... Are you my Daddy?" her small innocent voice would stare at the man in wonder. She had always wanted a daddy, since she had never had one. Honestly, the child never believed she needed a daddy to have a mommy. "Hmm... what's the Seirita?" she would place her finger over her lips in thought wondering where she heard the word before.

The Mother
The woman would hold her child in her arms as she was embraced and the small Emi seemed to grow weak in the knees. The woman would hold the child listening to her adorable British accent that she had no idea where it originated from, even still it was still her baby. The child spoke words that broke Mei's heart, she spoke words that would cause the woman to become shocked, but most of all she was so glad that her baby could still believe her words. The mother didn't want to let go of her found girl but Noziel's words would break through her mind.

The woman would lift her girl into her arms, after noticing and picking up the stuffed toy on the ground. After standing straight, the little girl would say something that would cause the pink eyed beauty to turn red in the face. "Uhh.. you know Emi.. I don't think.. that's really a question to ask," the woman would say in a flustered tone at the thought. Pink eyes would wander anywhere but the man that had traveled with her.

"WELL," Mei would say breaking her own sense of embarrassment, "this place you've been is the Rukongai. It's a reeeeally big circle. Where we're taking you in the middle of the circle.. except it's a lot smaller. The middle is where all of the Shinigami live, you've heard of them right? Mommy and Noziel, this man here, we live there. We need to go back quick because we're really important people and it takes a lot time, ok? Mommy is going to make this better than it was before.. I promise." The woman would smile as the trio made their way back towards the Seireitei. She couldn't wait to start her life over with her precious baby.

Emiko truly was the spitting image of her mother. While there were startling differences, like the eye color and odd british accent, there was no denying that. Curiously, I'd never actually heard anyone in the Soul Society with such an accent, but I let that bit of information stay as it was. As she finally confirmed it was her mother, she gradually progressed to a state of tears, collapsing into her mother. It was a beautiful scene, to see a child and her mother reunite once more. I knelt down beside the two, feeling as though I was supposed to have a part in this. Mei picked up her daughter, and sequentially, the bear left behind by Emiko. Oddly enough, my voice seemed to soothe and uplift little Emiko. Upon the child greeting me and asking me if I was her daddy, I looked at Mei and about lost it. For the first time in ages, my face flushed full crimson, and I lost my bearings almost completely. I'd never actually.. well. Uhm. I looked up to the sky, to catch my breath for a moment. "I suppose that could work." I would say, not fully aware that I was making a concious decision to stay close to Mei. In the back of my head, I decided that I needed a good drinking session after this was all said and done.. I wasn't mentally prepared for any of this.

It would seem Mei was also taken far aback by the question Emiko had asked me, and if I knew anything about the captain, she probably wouldn't mind the conjoined drinking, so long as the child was asleep. That thought, I left to the side, it would come up again later, most certainly. Mei began to explain the Rukongai and Seireitei to her child, in a simplistic language, but that hardly did it justice. While it's all she could fully explain, it was actually rather beautiful to see what the Rukongai had become. While some children still looked like they lived in poverty, all were well documented and taken after. It would explain why we found Emiko as soon as we did. As we got closer to the Seireitei, those thoughts I'd been having before, about Mei, about Emiko, came back, and I could not dismiss them. Though Emiko was likely asleep, I kissed the little girl on the forehead. To Mei, I would say "I've never gotten the chance to be a father. Though I could have never foreseen something like this, I don't think I'd mind being her Daddy." Immediately after finishing my declaration, I broke my gaze from her, hiding a flushed set of cheeks. If at some point later, she laid Emiko down to nap, I'd ask her if she wouldn't mind drinking with me, at least for now.

Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
The poor, pint sized blonde had to be tired and Mei could tell from the many signs he gave off. As she had done in her childhood, Emi would first lay her head upon her mother anywhere she deemed comfortable, which in ths case was her shoulder. Next, she would begin to play with the pink eyed woman's hair while she listened to a story that she was being told, as of now it was simply descriptions. Last, she would wrap her arms around her mother's neck and nod her head until it had stopped signalling her unconsciousness. As Mei finished speaking, she would notice the faint nodding of the child and decide to simply stay quiet until her hobbling head ceased to wobble.

Holding her baby within her arms was the best gift thalamus be could have ever given her in any of her lifetimes. After so many long years of the heartache and pain, Mei could finally hold her baby, live her little girl, and nurture her until she simply couldn't anymore. Her heart was filled with absolute joy but it was also filled with such heartbreak. How pong had her child been alone? How long had she been looking? 10? 100? 300? 500 years? How was she so small? What sort of good karma had she received to deserve to have her small, 10 year old little girl in her arms again? The woman would hug her child to her tighter but it wouldn't be enough to wake her.

The only thing that had brought her from her thoughts was the image of Noziel moving closer to her and planting a kiss upon her child's forehead. At first, it had come as a sort of shock to her in multiple senses simply from remembering those past experiences her child had been the cause of in their eyes. Her own father had abandoned her pregnant mother for not wanting her. She had trouble finding and keeping jobs due to her baby. She had trouble finding men that were interested in her causing her to be single for her entire former life, however she still loved her baby. So when Noziel planted a kiss upon the little girl's forehead, Mei seemed to be astonished and amazed all in one.

The Captain continued to carry on walking, although it was completely not what she had been thinking about at all. Mei's face would glow red at the idea that Noziel had spoken out slowing her walk to almost a stop just before the gates of the Seireitei. "Y-You.. You.. what?" Mei's voice would sound quite shaky and unsteady. Her face of joy would turn to embarrassment and then confusion all in one moment. Pink eyes would begin to water as the woman thought about what he just said. The blonde would attempt to smile only for tears to escape her eyes and roll down her cheeks. She would hold her little girl close as the tears came flooding.

"You're the first one. You're the first one to ever say that. I-I... don't think you... You should know a few things first... after we get back to the barracks," the Captain's eyes would continue to dispense the liquid as she thought about the many things she would need to tell Noziel. She couldn't let her baby get hurt ever. She needed him to be sure that this is what he wanted. She needed him to be sure that he could deal with what they had.

I tried not to show that I was aware of Mei's surge of emotion. I knew that sensation all too well. She had to double-take and ask me again, just to be sure that I'd said what I meant. I understood completely. She had trouble with men in the past, finding it hard to trust them, much in the same way I'd found it hard to trust women. Mei was a much different case, however. Looking at her, I could tell her emotions were genuine. As the tears rolled down her face, finally being able to say it, "You're the first one. You're the first one to ever say that. I-I... don't think you... You should know a few things first... after we get back to the barracks," I merely nodded, as we drew closer to the barracks that Mei deemed her home away from home. As we passed through the gate, I would hold out my hand for Mei, and for Mei alone. No one else deserved my trust as she did. No one else could warm my heart as she and her Emiko did. Others could say what they wanted. I was sure about this. It was up to her whether to grasp me or not, and either way, I would smile warmly, to comfort her as she usually did for others.

We drew further into the Seireitei, into the central area, and long into the Division headquarters. As we entered the area that was designated for Squad 4, I would escort Mei in first, my hand gently supporting the small of her back, therein following after her. There were bodies laying in the back, as was usually the case. If there were ever a good day for Squad 4, it would be the day when no one was in need of their services. I didn't see that happening anytime soon, considering the state of affairs in Gotei. I waved at a new face, one who seemed just as kind as Mei, with bandages around her arms, simply floating there. I would wait for Mei to settle Emiko down somewhere, probably in her mother's bed, and begin talking to me. If she had something to tell me, I'd listen without fail.

Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
Mei hadn't even taken a single moment to look in Noziel's direction again. The blonde haired captain continued on through the Seireitei noticing the strange looks she was being given and the confused expressions some of the Gotei had on their faces. With a hint of fierce anger gleaming in her bright, pink eyes, the others would seem to brush off their looks or take up an appearance similar to fear. The small child would rustle around on Mei's shoulder before settling back into slumber with her small face hurried in the woman's neck. A light, sad smile would spread across the woman's features thinking back to the life they used to live together. "Everything will be better..." the whispered words would protrude from the mother's lips barely audible.

Stepping into the Squad 4 barracks, Mei would accept the hand of Noziel, however her eyes wouldn't glance in his direction. The woman would search the many faces in the halls looking for any sort of distressed expression, however she would find none. This would gladly calm her down knowing she would have time to her child, Noziel, and herself. The woman would smile to her subordinates as they seemed to give her mixed smiles of confusion. Not wanting to question their captain, the Shinigami would wander off to complete their tasks so they could finally turn in for the remainder of the day. Finally, the trio would make it to the Captain's quarters, where Mei's bed was. The woman would lay Emiko down and cover her up to her shoulder. After a moment of standing over the child, Mei would lean down and kiss the girl on the forehead.

Moments later, Mei would move herself away from her bed and toward a three seat couch in the center of her room, however she would stop half way. Her body would swivel to the right leading her to a locked cabinet, that only she had access to, and she would remove a decent sized bottle with two small glasses. Then, she would finish her journey to the couch, "Come, Sit, have a drink with me.. I really need it." The woman would pop the cork off the top pouring out a rather strong smelling liquid into the two glasses, although it want very much. Mei would sip her drink before making a sort of sour face and mumbling, ".. I'm getting soft..." The woman would then take a moment of silence allowing for Noziel to sit.

"Would you like to hear a sad story?" The woman would seem to ask Noziel but by this point she seemed so torn that she didn't seem to even see her surroundings.

After Mei put Emiko to bed, she moved over towards a long couch. She began to sat down, and then froze. Getting back up, she walked over to a cabinet. Her movements were slow and deliberate. Every little motion of her hand seemed well thought out, as though she really wanted to be sure that she was ready for whatever was in that cabinet. She pulled out a bottle of liquor, as if she'd been reading my mind earlier, with which the bottle was accompanied by two thin glasses. She sat back down onto the couch and allowed me to sit with her, knowing full well what her alcohol tolerance was. The liquor in particular was strong enough to fill the room with a noticeable smell. Anyone who knew the Captain probably wouldn't care though. Filling the two glasses, then taking a sip, she seemed to take a bit too much at once. I kind of chuckled a little, but figured it'd been a while since she'd last been drinking. As we sipped away, she asked me, seeming to bite her lip as she did so, if I would like to hear a sad story. With the question lingering in the air, she almost seemed to regret asking it, as her expression was one of inner conflict.

Looking over to her, I said what I would have said, sober or intoxicated, "I'd love to hear it, Mei." It was a simple response, but in truth, I loved to bear witness to the lives of others. Sadness cannot exist without joy, Pain cannot exist without health. So too, I took into consideration that she had a sad tale to go along with the joy of having regained her daughter.

Mei's 4th Squad
Hearing him agree to her question would make her sigh and stare at her drink in contemplation. Then without further adieu, the woman would take whatever was left in her glass and dispose of it down her throat. The woman would shiver a bit attempting to regain her love and high tolerance for the liquor she had so desired that very day. After a moment of regaining her composure, the woman would pour herself another small glass before turning towards Noziel.

"Have you ever been in love? I have a total of two times so far in my whole existence. The first time was a smart, wealthy, and charming man that I thought was my whole world. I was ready for our future and I thought he was too. Her proposed to me and then... I became pregnant. My small, beautiful number two was always the true love of my life. Emiko's father left me to fend for the both of us. We lived in a small, torn up apartment our entire human lives. At first, it was hard but it progressively became the normal everyday struggle. We were so happy together. Emiko was the only happiness I had ever known. When she turned sixteen, I got a call. She had been killed in an accident but they wouldn't tell me what kind of accident..." as the story progressed tears would form in the woman's eyes and her voice would become quite shaky, "sh-she had been shot in the abdomen so many times.. How could it have been an accident? How could I have failed her? What kind of mother was I to lose the only possession that had value to me?.... My child... was dead..." Mei would take a moment to look away from Noziel and stare in the direction her child slept. The woman would wipe her eyes before continuing, "Her own father never visited her, never cared she existed, and never grieved over her loss. She always wondered where he was and what she had done. I had always told her it was my fault that I had hurt him. She never forgave me for that but she didn't cause me any more pain than his memory did. Her anger was silent because she loved me so much. I can't let her go through that again. I can't let her go... I cant fail her this time... it's a miracle that she doesn't remember him... but I don't want to lie to her. I don't want to love another man like him..."

The woman had stopped crying, however she stared at the floor in a distant manner. Pink eyes had taken a dejected appearance and her blonde hair fell into her eyes forming a barrier between the two Captains.

Before Mei began to tell her tale, she polished off her glass. Whatever it was, it must have been a heavy load on her mind. She refilled it again, took another sip, then with a good pause, began to tell her story. She asked me if I'd ever been in love. I couldn't answer her, and my expression went blank. She stated that she had twice, once with her husband in her human life, and once with her daughter, Emiko. She told me about how her husband just left, never to be heard from again. She told me how hard it was for Mei and her daughter to get by. She fairly noted that despite the difficulty and the pain, that they were happy to have each other. This happiness only lasted until Emiko was 16. Then tragedy reared its head. As she reached this part of her story, her voice broke, and she fell into tears. I reached over to rub her back, carefully, but enough to show her that I cared.

I couldn't quite process how someone could be so cruel as to end the life of someone like Emiko, as innocent as she was. I decided to put the thought out of my mind. She even seemed to blame herself for this. As she stopped again, she regained her composure, wiping her eyes taking a quick glance at her child. Then she would look back to me and continue. She glossed over the fact that the father of young Emiko had no presence in her life, that Emiko wondered why he wouldn't come back. Mei shared that she had told her child that it was her fault, and an anger stayed there between them. But her daughter was here. She was not angry. The very last set of words she spoke however, resonated with me. "I don't want to love another man like him..."

To this point, I'd been holding back everything I wanted to say, out of respect for Mei and her tale, and also, to put more effort into listening. To her, Emiko was her life, and in turn, her death, and even now, her rebirth. I began the only way I knew how. "Mei, I'm very sorry that you had to go through all that. It's far too much for any one heart to bear. Though I suppose the important part is that Emiko is here again." I paused again for a moment, finishing off the liquor in my glass, surprisingly, enjoying it instead of recoiling from the alcohol. That line from before came back to the front of my mind and I looked into the set of pink eyes that I'd been seeing a lot of lately. "You don't have to love another man like that. I'm nothing like that at all. Lately, sure I've been kinda grumpy and grouchy.. but seeing you and Emiko has changed so much about me. I wouldn't mind being a part of that. I wouldn't hurt you, or little Emiko. I wouldn't have a reason to. Maybe I will be Emiko's father. The one she should have had all along."

Mei was probably as red as a sheet now, whether due to my dramatic speech or to the solid amount of alcohol in her system, no one could really tell. But I meant that. I wouldn't mind being a part of Mei's world, and being the father figure Emiko really seemed to want to have. I suppose I was getting sentimental after finally catching a break. By now, I'd be looking into Mei's big pink eyes. I'm sure she'd be tearing up and all of that, even after trying so hard to get herself together. This is exactly what she should have had while she was alive, this happiness. Maybe a real love would change all of that.

Mei's 4th Squad
Mei's 4th Squad
The blonde hair would keep Mei locked inside her own little world with all of the thoughts that seemed to burden her. The swarmed and swirled causing the woman to take another sip from her glass. She wanted them gone, she wanted him gone, she wanted that life gone, and she wanted her pain gone. The woman would seem to be separated from the world before hearing Noziel's voice once more. Her form didn't move within that time and his words only seemed to lift her up a bit more. Her mind pictured the many nights she spent laying beside her baby, the many nights they played their favorite games, and the many days Emiko would dance. Her child was her whole workd and the exact mini version of the blonde woman all except for the eyes.

Then, Noziel would begin to speak words that would cause Mei to stare through her blonde locks at him. He spoke about him not being like Emiko's biological father. He spoke about him never doing the things her belated fiance would. He spoke about being a part of their family. In all honesty, it made Mei feel rather confused and conflicted. Her once fair features were bright red while her eyes seemed to be holding back the pressure of tears. The woman would search for something to say.. anything at all. However, The only thing she could think to say was, "W-What do you mean?"

My prediction was correct, as Mei was now indeed bright red. Her eyes filled with tears, and her hair seemed to fall in such a way that signified her stress. She looked at me, seeming as though she were to fall apart at any moment. She seemed to be trying to speak but to no avail. A moment of stammering passed by and Mei finally said it. She asked me what I meant by everything I had said. "You know quite well what I mean, Mei. I want to take the place of the one who has long left you. In the place in your heart where there is a hole, I will fill it, and you will no longer have to suffer with your past. Emiko will be as much my daughter as she is yours, and you will be my wife. Is that quite alright my dear?"

After I said this, I would smile, then attempt to pull the Captain in for an embrace. She'd had quite a rough time as a human, and an even rougher time as a Shinigami. She'd gotten to where she is now through hard work and hope. Though I knew hardly anything, I could feel her pain emanating from her. Hopefully she would accept my request, and allow me to become a part of her life. At that moment, there was nothing that I wanted more. If she needed to cry into my shoulder, most certainly I would let her.
