I consider myself to be a fairly decent roleplayer. On my own roleplay guide [Link Here!] I would consider myself Literate, but not Advanced. Not yet, anyway.

But what I'm here to tell you right now is this: EVERYONE can Improve.

EVERYONE
(Yes, even you)
CAN
IMPROVE

It just takes a bit of effort and a lot of practice.

Let's use myself as an example.

Nine years ago, I got into roleplaying for the first time. It was a Naruto site (which is long-since dead) and I had only just begun to watch the anime, but I was so excited with it that I joined immediately. Then I realized I didn't know what I was doing, so I kind of just threw stuff together to look cool.

This was my first ever character.

Deruji Uchiha wrote:Name: Deruji Rowanu (JAPANESE)

(Name: Dirge Rowan (ENGLISH))

Age: 13

Birthday: June 20, 1795

Gender: Male

Blood Type: AB-

Clan: Deruji is actually part of the Uchiha Clan. His father was not, so that’s why his last name is Rowanu.

Appearance: Deruji has spiked white hair, tanned skin, and red eyes. He wears a shirtless peice of "armor" with a gold uchiha symbol on the front. His pants are made of the same material, and his boots and burned, toughned leather. He has at least one of his swords by his side always, but usually won't use it do to not needing it. Deruji is about 125 pounds; and is about 5'4" tall. He never smiles, and has very good posture, but is usually bent over a small black book.

Personality: Deruji is a cold, antisocial person, who never speaks to someone he does not know. On top of that, it is rare to hear him speak more than a few words at a time. If you did... well, you’ll have to figure that out for yourself...

Desired Village:Konoha, the village hidden in the leaves.

Ninja Rank: Genin

Character's History:

Deruji Rowanu was a strange child growing up. He did not remember his parents, and was an orphan. Because the other children’s parents did not like him, the other children did not like him either. He was very smart, and learned skills quickly. He actually has an unlimited potential, and if he could not learn a skill on the first try, he would keep trying. He had a strong heart, but was a little foolish because he never gave up which cost him severely, because it meant that he had little common sense.

Deruji was actually born over two-hundred years ago. For a reason unknown to him, he was frozen in time by a strange jutsu. He knew all the people from that time which are now famous: Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, ect.

When Deruji finally entered the official academy, he made a friend, named Kai Uchiha. They were getting closer and closer, and when they were ready to take the chunin exams, they decided to make sure they were on the same team. Deruji got stronger and stronger, but was still too weak to pass. He decided to train very night, and work every day for three weeks; he hoped that would work.

Equipment: Deruji has his swords he calls the Swords of the Aeons, his regular outfit, and also has a special necklace given to him by his father before he died. It is a lion’s head over a steel cross. His gloves are called turncoat, When he gets his headband, he will put that in view too.

Objectives: To be one of the Anbu Black Ops, and find out why he was frozen for two hundred years.

I chose to keep the color so you can see how I designed it back then, as well.

You can also see my first roleplaying post, since I'm here to teach you how you can improve.

First RP wrote:Deruji was hidden on top of the hokage's office. he noticed Kai Uchiha walkig by. "I told him that after class, i would KILL him, here goes!"

Deruji whipped out his sword and running towards Kai, used the Katon Goukakyuu no Jutsu!

So... yeah. There was clearly room for improvement back then.

I still think there's room for improvement now.

All it takes is some time, and some patience. Practice helps, too.

So get out there! Roleplay! If people laugh at you, laugh with them! Admitting you're bad leads to people offering to help you, whereas saying you're good (when you're not) just makes people think you're an idiot so they just laugh at you.

And you'll improve.

I promise.

Because,
EVERYONE
CAN
IMPROVE

Here's some more proof you can improve. What I'm about to post was something I wrote for Deruji's death; this occurred about 5 months after I first started. Take a look at the post up above, Deruji's first post, before you read this. Now, again, this is mid-late 2008 so my Grammar and everything was shit. It's still occasionally bad, but not like this. I haven't fixed any typos in this post, nor will I. Enjoy!

The Grad Finale, ONLY ONE WALKS OUT!!!!:
Deruji stood there, when the wind struck his face. He did not shiver, simply turned away. What was now in front of him was a crystal clear lake, untouched by man. Deruji had come here many times, but had never actually gone on the lake. He decided now would be the best chance.

The wind had picked up a little by the time Deruji was in the middle of the lake. He figured there was no reason to go back, so he kept going. When he got about half way across, Deruji started to sink. He did not know why, so he focused more chakra into his feet, and floated back up.

Deruji got all the way across, when he almost ran out of energy. He ate a soldier pill, and went back out. This time, however he decided to swim. He got half way across again, when he felt a huge tug. He was forcibly tucked under the water, and continued to sink. He got all the way to the bottom (he stood up on it) when he realized he could breathe and see fine. He looked around, and heard many strange voices calling to him.

Deruji did not believe this, so he activated his Sharingan only for a minute, where it could dispel the Genjutsu if that's what it was. He did this, but was still on the bottom of the lake. He reached for his sword, but it was not there. He looked up in disgrace and saw his swords, and other equipment all floated here. He did not understand what was going on.

Deruji tried to swim up, but realized (finally) that he was actually walking on the bottom, so he couldn't jump very high. After about an hour, Deruji got tired of this. He started to walk forward, when he heard another voice, this one more distinctive. He listened in, and heard the path that would help him. He got through the right door, when there was a Konohagakure ninja inside.

Deruji ran up to this person, and threw ten rapid punches. Only one got through. "The ninja's defense is incredible! I can't keep up with his speed either. This'll be a little tough." Deruji thought to himself. He ran towards the wall, and jumped off of it over the other ninja. He then turned around, and kicked the ninja straight in the back. He/She turned around, and looked Deruji right in the eyes. The ninja said four words: "That hurts you know."

Deruji did not understand this. That kick nearly knocked out his best friend Kai, but it did nothing to this ninja. Deruji had to think of a plan quickly. He looked around, and then saw two kunais in the wall. Deruji ran over to them, and he grabbed the two. He swiftly aimed and chucked one kunai at this ninja, praying it world not miss. Unfortunately, it did. Deruji ran up to him/her and started attacking with the kunai like a dagger. He hoped this would work also. The ninja was severly cut on his/her right arm. The ninja just stood there, and without even moving, was killed? Deruji was out of breathe, but he grabbed his other kunai, and walked out of the room. The other strange ninja's hand gripped tightly as his/her eyes opened...

Deruji punched down the next door, and inside was a man holding a strange resemblance to the Fourth Hokage of Konoha. Deruji walked forward, but the man went back further. Every step Deruji took, the man took five backwards. Deruji thought for a minute, and realized how to bypass this.

Deruji turned around, and so did the other man. Both started walking backwards, and Deruji got face to face with him. He raised his hand in a threatening manner, but released hs grip when the face was shown as Kai Uchiha's. Deruji stumbled backwards, and fell down.

Deruji then eventually woke up, and he saw the lake again. He stood up, and had all his equipment where he left it. He remembered the ninja scaring him on the leg, so he looked at both legs but still saw nothing amiss. He did not understand this, and realized that he must have fallen asleep, so nothing had ever occurred. Just then, a dark shadow across the lake used some foreign jutsu, and looked at Deruji. This ninja had a konoha headband and a scar on his right arm...
--THE NEXT DAY--

Deruji had gone back to the lake the next day. He did not want to have a chance to fall asleep, so he immediately put his equipment on, and ran out to the middle of the lake. He then got their, but felt no tug. He knew he would have to take a risk, so he jumped up, and went under.

Deruji was still holding his breathe, but e wasn't going under fast enough. He focused chakra into his feet, and started to run back up to the surface. Deruji could run faster than he could swim. By the time Deruji had finally gotten to the surface, he was gasping for breath. He felt that with each breath, it felt like he lost more. Deruji just stopped breathing, when he saw a huge shadow cover the area he was laying on. He loked up and saw nothing there?

Deruji was sure he had seen a shadow, but he ignores it, and goes to sleep. When he woke up, it was midnight, and it seemed that no one had worried about him, so Deruji decided to stay a little longer. In the morning, Deruji opened his eyes to see a bright white ceiling. He tried to sit up so he could get a good look at his surroundings when he noticed that he couldn't move at all. Deruji tried moving his head, and that didn't work either.

Deruji heard some people coming, so he closed his eyes and pretended to sleep. He heard four people start to speak in and out of turn. One sounded female, two sounded male, but Deruji couldn't tell who the fourth one was. He knew it from somewhere, but he just couldn't pinpoint it. He then heard the female voice say something about catching an Uchiha, and killing him so they could get the Sharingan eyes. Deruji cried a single tear, and then opened his eyes and started screaming. He couldn't tell what he was saying, it was all too blurry. Deruji then felt a sharp sting go up his spine. He saw everything go even more blurry, and then fainted.

When Deruji woke up again, he instantly tried to activate his Sharingan, hoping he had not lost it, and it worked. He sighed heavily out of relief, and then tried to get up again. When it worked, he decided to look around and figure out what was going on. Deruji walked out of his room, and looked up and down the hall. He saw only three doors in all; one across from him, and two down a little ways. Deruji decided to try and enter the room across from him when he was greeted by a strange ninja who had a still fresh scar up his right arm. This same ninja had on a Konohagakure headband.

Deruji instantly realized who it was, but did not move. He reached for his equipment and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was still there. He threw a glass kunai, and it hit the ninja, but did not shatter. Instead, the ninja caught it in his hand, and threw it back at Deruji. Deruji jumped away, and started swearing. He asked what the ninja's name was, and only got "Kai Uchiha" as an answer. Deruji was surprised that he could not tell who Kai was, but ignored it.

Deruji reached for his sword, gripped it tightly, and pulled it out slowly. Inch by inch the blackened silver on the blade was revealed. Deruji then swiftly unsheathed the other one and charged at Kai. Deruji raised both hands, and brought them down in an effort to kill Kai. What Deruji did not expect, was to see the ninja grab both swords, and throw Deruji all the way down the hall, all the while still holding the swords while Deruji was flying. Kai gripped the swords so tightly, that he started bleeding. Deruji ran up to him, and quickly punched the ninja three hundred times (even though none got through), when Kai just picked Deruji up with one hand, and threw him the other way.

While Deruji was being thrown, he threw all of his kunais and senbons. He even through a few smoke bombs, and attached ninja wire to his kunais. The ninja would surely have died. Deruji gained his footing, and ran back to where the attack was. He scavenged all he could, which was only the senbons and all the ninja wire, and started to walk off. He heard Kai say something along the lines of, you suck kid. Keep practicing. I'll tell you what; stay right there and don't do anything to me. You'll thank me, but not right away. Deruji watched as Kai Uchiha had walked in front of him, but did not move. Deruji had very badly wanted to punch Kai, especially when he was slapped clean across the face four times. He heard, "One more" when he was kicked in the gut. Deruji squenched his eyes shut, and when he opened them, he saw the first few ninja he saw there in white coat getting ready to take his eyes. Deruji got up, and pulled out his swords. He then struck three ninja down, but let the fourth one live. "Thank you Kai," Deruji said as he walked out.
--THE NEXT DAY--

Deruji went back there the next day, ready to finish the mess with Kai. They had fought since they knew eachother, and Deruji was tired of it. This would be the last time, either Kai, or Deruji would walk away; not both...

Deruji got there when he noticed something was greatly amiss. It was only seven o' clock, and it was already a red sky. Deruji had a bad feeling that only greatened when he felt the cold sting of a shuriken scrape the skin off his neck. He could feel the blood rushing out of his new wound, but he did his best to ignore it. Glaring at Kai's shadow, Deruji noticed one thing about it: it wasn't there.

This told him instantly that it was a genjutsu. Turning around, Deruji raised an arm and pulled his sword from it's sheathe, in an attempt to be ready for anything he saw. Strange enough, nothing was there. he looked around intently, and didn't see anything when he was suddenly struck with a violent force that threw him under the waer level. He couldn't open his eyes, but he felt continuos hits. It was obvious that Kai was sick of the constant fighting between them, and he too intended to end it once and for all.

Punches wer thrown, but Kai and Deruji were evenly mathced, and unless one messed up soon, they would both drown of air. Right at that moment, both of them started to run out of air. Getting to the surface hastily, Deruji was kicked back under by the clone. He only had time to breathe in, and he couldn't catch his breath, and thought that Kai would win by cheating when he felt his hand grabed and brought back to the surface. In the same motion, Deruji was thrown high into the air.

Kai jumped up after him, his sword in an attacking stance, and raised his arm in an attempt to cut Deruji. trying to dodge it, Deruji lost his thought, and got his arm cut incredibly deeply. His wailed in pain, but that did nothing to stop to hand signs, and emotionless face of Kai. Deruji looked into it, and felt an all to deadly chill up his spine when Kai's eyes were a bloodshot red, and there were comma shapes inside of it...

"th-th-the sharingan? How, he couldn't have had that much time, unless he had it ready before..." Deruji thught to himself. At the time he was back in action, it was almost to late. His left arm was hanging limp at his side, when he moved in such a way that made it fly up through the air and smack Kai across the face. The red mark glowed as the sun was finally coming up out of it's cave, and started to brighten the day. Deruji took the moment of oppertunity to rush up, and strike Kai with the sword. A surprising mark was on Deruji's face, when Kai wasn't there when he was "hit." Deruji realized that was the clone; unfortunately, it was all to late...

Kai was down below, his sword now not in his hand, but more likly in Deruji's back. In the moment, Kai had an oppertunity of his own, and threw his sword in such a way, that it went through Deruji's back, in an utterly fatal finishing blow. His body heading back down to the ground, Kai ran over to catch it. He looked into his eyes, and though Deruji was dead, he saw the Sharingan was activated. Kai looked into Deruji's eyes, and then just dropped him. He was gasping for air, still alive, and his sharingan was activated.

Kai just walked away, but one thing disturbed the water more than the walking: Kai's tear...

Thanks, to both of you. I worked hard to get to where I am, and even where I am I know that, if we were both using the exact same character sheet, I'd lose in a fight against Ika or Rena. I have a long ways to go before I can say I've peaked out, but the best tip I can give to anyone who wants to be better, read a fucking book. Sincerely, it will help you. Even subtle things that you can mimic.

Here's an example of that. I read "The Giver" a long time ago in school; I own a copy of it, so about a month ago I reread it when there was no power in the house. Took me maybe 12 hours to read the whole book, and I'd like to think my Roleplaying this past month has been better than before. Subtle things, like Kairi Alexstrasza being very careful about her choice of vocabulary, or how I describe the feeling of coldness by the sensation of hairs sticking up and goosebumps causing extra sensitivity... they're picked up from the Giver. Read a book, if you want to get better; it helps. A lot.

I can identify with that, roleplaying a lot didn't help me.. I am a far better Roleplayer now than I ever was in the past even though I hadn't RPed in a very long time before coming back 9 months ago..I learned from picking up on how other writers write, and being a writer on my own accord. My favorites in history are a lot of philosophers, Nietzsche, Evola, Schopenhaur, and people of that ilk that fit that mold, but also more crass English writers like Chaucer! (Chaucer is amazing)

I've definitely gotten better since I started. Considering I've played Dungeons and Dragons since I was eight, I wasn't terrible when I began, but I've definitely improved my writing since then.

There's been a lot of others who have improved along with me, and I'd like to give a shout-out to one of them here. No names, you have to guess who wrote it!

Name: The Valley
Number: None its a custom personal Kido
Category: Hadou
Incatation: I was raised in the valley there was shadows and death.Got out alive but with scars I can't forget. This kid back in school, subdued and shy,an orphan and a brother and unseen by most eyes! I don't know what it was that made apiece of him die, took a boy to the forest slaughtered him with a scythe! A stamp on his face,an impression in the dirt do you think the silence makes a good man convert.
Effect:This move can only be used in Ikas Bankai or he will pass out after using this Kidou. Its effect is to diable airwalking and HoHo and makes a valley that Ika controls which is pitch dark and without sound. As the opponent walks through it they must walk over razors and scythes will be launched at the them constantly for the 1000 mile (5 post) walk of misery. He can also rain down thousands of scythes upon his opponent but this can only be used twice. Once they get out and if they get out Ika will be in a very Fatigued state though they will be a bloody wreck. To get through this you would have to be at least 1-3 and even then its unlikely. This Kidou can be used once a battle.
